What is Dry Eye Disease?

Dry eye disease occurs when the eyes fail to produce enough natural tears, or the tears evaporate too quickly.

Tears are vital to the overall health of our eyes. Each time we blink, a protective coating of tears is spread like a film over the front of the eyes.

When there is an inadequacy of tears, dry eyes are the result. Symptoms of dry eye can include:

  • burning
  • stinging
  • irritation
  • redness
  • discharge and blurring

These symptoms can range from very mild and occasional to quite severe and chronic.

What about the quality of tear film?

Tear film is the liquid that protects the cornea. This liquid is what keeps the eyes sufficiently hydrated and lubricated.

Cross section of the tear film layersThere are 3 layers that make up the tear film:
  1. an oil (lipid) layer
  2. a water (aqueous) layer, and
  3. a mucin layer

These 3 layers work together to protect our eyes and guard against infection. When the tear film evaporates or breaks up too quickly, dry eyes are the result.

The quality of the tears can be compromised by an inadequacy of any of the 3 layers of the tear film. Tear film quality can also be affected as the aging process occurs, as symptoms of dry eye are more likely to present themselves.
