University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP)

The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) is a mandatory health plan for international non-residents studying or working at a participating university or affiliated college in Ontario.

UHIP provides coverage for basic medical services and treatments you and your eligible dependants might need to maintain your health while living in Canada.

With respect to vision services, UHIP will reimburse you the same amount as OHIP pays for one eye examination every 12 months for each covered person under age 20 or 65 and over. This is typically $42.50. As UHIP is a private plan, we bill our usual eye exam fee and you must submit to UHIP for reimbursement.

It is important to note that UHIP does not cover anything toward vision correction (i.e. glasses/contact lenses) and does not cover eye exams for those between the ages of 20 and 64.
